A red woodpecker lands head first on a rock. Boing! A pig with a beehive stuck over its head lands on the ground next to the rock. Boing! Boing! The pig smacks its head on a rock. WHAK! The beehive cracks. The pieces falls to the ground and the pig smiles with some missing teeth and a spiral with bees is over its swollen and honey-covered head.

Gramps Squirrel raises a stick in the air and screams, “Choose your weapons!” Norma, the triangular squirrel grabs a thick stick and says, “Ha!” Belly, a round squirrel raises a barbed stick in the air and says, “Arrr!” Little Bee, the smallest squirrel, holds a pencil that she is using to write a letter on a long piece of paper with.

Two girls joined at the side of the head are talking to Peter Cadaver, the Frankenstein-monster-looking kid and his witch friend, Belanie in the hallway at school. One of the girls with black-haired girl dressed in black says, “We’re not evil.” Belanie says,”Why do people call you ‘the evil twins’?” The blonde girl that’s part of the two joined girls says, “Because people haven’t got to know us, and they can dislike the unknown.” Belanie says, “Really?” “No, it’s because we can read people’s thoughts.” says the other girl. Belanie says, “But that’s no reason to dislike y–” A wizard kid walks past the group with a finger under his nose and frowning. The black-haired girl says, “Yes, it’s Belanie that smells bad.” Belanie frowns and puts her two arms straight down, “Hey!”

Little Green Monsters by Tony Alioto

A one-eyed green monster stands next to another monster with one eye and yellow hair that stands watching a toaster that says “Toast-er-ama 5000”. “What are you doing?” the monster asks. “Waiting for my toast,” says the other monster with yellow hair. They both watch the toaster. Two pieces of toast pop into the air. “Ahhh!” says the monster. The other monster holds up a plate.

Joonbug’s World by Imani Lateef

A Day in the Life of a Superhero. Joonbug is smiling and waving. Joonbug is a kid dressed in a robot suit with antennae. He looks very stiff and is flat like a board. The caption says, “The Laundry Tips. 1. Be careful with the starch.” The next panel has a caption that says, “Don’t mix colors.” Joonbug has his tight shorts that he wears over his blue suit are now pink. Joonbug looks down and says, “Yikes.” The next panel has a caption that says, “3. Always plan ahead.” Joonbug is in his polka-dot boxers and is saying to a fuzzy green moth character, “You caught me on Laundry Day! But I’m not going down without a fight!” The green moth holds up its hand at Joonbug and says, “Ew, no thanks! My eyes!”

Small Word Rat & Big Word Rat by Kevin McCloskey

Big Word Rat is excited and telling Small Word Rat, “I recently encountered Mickey Mouse!” Small Word Rat says, “You met him?” The blue bird flies in and says, “Did you take a selfie? Did you get his autograph?” Big Word Rat shakes its fists and says, “Snickerdoodle! Apple Sauce! Rutabaga!” Small Word Rat says, “What does that mean?” The blue bird says, “That means- no selfie, no autograph.” Big Word Rat puts its hand on its forehead. Small Word Rat says, “Oh.”

Mark & Zark by Dan Moynihan

Earthlings wake up and eat cereal. The father of Mark holds up a spoon with yellow curds in it and says to Mark, “Sure you don’t want some eggs in your cereal? It’s really good…” Mark says, “Yes, I’m sure.” It’s kind of nice to know that after breakfast there’s school, then lunch, then soccer, and then more school. Mark is playing soccer with Zark, the green Martian friend and school friends. Mark kicks a ball into the goal. He says, “Yes, I did it!” After school, there are a few more hours before we go back to sleep and get ready to do it all over again the next day. Mark and Zark build a rocky land with colorful clay substance and add glowing origami creatures to it. Now there’s just one more sleep and one more bowl of cereal until the science fair. Zark the martian rides a hoverboard into the night sky away from Mark’s house.
