Cooper by Jarrett Lerner

Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls, stands in his messy bedroom holding some papers, pretending to be a teacher. He gestures to an easel that shows 3+4= . “Bubba? Rover?” he asks, but nobody responds. In the next panel we see a stuffed bunny fall down next to a goldfish in its fishbowl. Reggie looks defeated and says, “Fine. We’ll start with recess.”

What’s your favorite school subject?

Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy, an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, hops on its tiptoes across a pink floor. “Hot lava! Hot lava! HOT HOT LAVA!” the cat exclaims. Then it grabs onto a pair of hairy human legs and says, “Safe!” From off panel, the human says, “Ouch.”

Have you ever pretended the floor is lava?

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “The Littlest Dungeon Guard so loved her spear,” (a small, cute skeleton in a tunic hugs a pointy spear and hearts appear). “She carried it there, and she carried it here.” (the skeleton is in her sleeping next to the spear, which has its own little bed). “Of danger came calling, for fighting and brawlin’,” (the skeleton’s back is facing the panel – she holds her spear as she looks up at a big, brown, fuzzy horned monster with one eye and green goo oozing from its mouth). “She’s swiftly poke it in the rear.” (she pokes the monster’s butt and it jumps up and cries “Ouch!”)

What object do you love most?

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

Norma and Belly, two squirrels, look at a page in an open book. Norma asks, “Can you read any of this?” “Not really,” Belly replies. Norma shuts the book and says, “We don’t need a recipe. We’re naturals!” “Yeah!” Belly exclaims.

Have you ever made up your own recipe?

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

Mr. Wolf, a brown anthropomorphic wolf in a blue button-up shirt, holds a to-go cup of coffee. “It’s silent reading time everyone,” he says. “Please be reading your books. Voices are off!” Mr. Wolf turns off the light. Two students, a pink cat and a white bird, read their books. Mr. Wolf takes a sip of coffee, and all the kids notice. They ignore their books and call out: “I want coffee!” “Yummy! Gimme caffeine!”

Have you ever tried drinking coffee?

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

A tan dog in a blue shirt (Pup) sleepily pulls a box of cereal from the pantry as Duck (small, yellow, and round) watches. Pup and Duck sit side by side at the table. Pup sleepily pours himself a bowl of cereal and eats. Duck sneaks off with the cereal box, and when Pup finally notices, he sees Duck on the ground. Duck’s head is shoved inside the cereal box – Munch! Munch!

Has your breakfast ever disappeared?
