Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls, yells, “I’M BORED!” From off panel, his mom calls, “I know what you can do: clean up this mess!” Reggie runs through a mess of toys, papers, and art supplies, into his bedroom and slams the door shut. Panting and sweating, he tells his stuffed animal, “Remind me NEVER to say that in front of Mama again!”

Do you have a messy room? (Be honest!)

Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy (LTK), an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, pours a watering can over a mound of dirt. LTK pats the soil. Then – POINK! A small white sprout appears in the mound. Suddenly it grows into a huge flower and hugs a very happy LTK.

Have you ever taken care of a plant?

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “The Littlest Dungeon Guard lived underground,” (LDG, a small, cute skeleton in a purple tunic, runs through a cave holding a torch)/ “Where sunlight is rare, and darkness abounds.” (LDG holds up her torch in the darkness and looks scared)/ “When LDG got frightened, she’d call her friends who’d lighten” (LDG asks, “Hey, can I get a light?”)/ “And their glow made her feel safe and sound.” (LDG smiles, as little glowing blue worms clutch to the rocks around her.)

Would you rather have a night-light or glowing cave worms?

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

A caption reads: “Donut recipe – 1 c. acorn flour.” Belly, a round squirrel, pushes a big rock uphill and thinks of a donut. Belly pushes the rock off a cliff – “GAH!” The rock lands with a WHUMP! and crushes an acorn into small pieces. Norma, a triangular squirrel, has a stack of acorns waiting nearby. She’s about to place one on a flat rock and says, “Just a few more, Belly!” Belly frowns and pushes another big rock.

Can you think of another way to make acorn flour?

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

Mr. Wolf, a brown anthropomorphic teacher wolf in an orange plaid shirt and red tie, looks at two cups filled with pencils. He thinks, “We started this year with so many pencils. What happened to them all?” Mr. Wolf tells his animal students, “Okay, stop what you’re doing, everyone! We are now going to search the room for missing pencils!” The kids search and respond: “I found one!” “Over here!” “I see one!” Mr. Wolf cheers, “Leave no stone unturned!”

Do pencils go missing in your classroom?

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

Duck (small, yellow, and round) chows down on cereal, his head buried in the box. Pup, a tan dog in a blue shirt, scratches his head, then grabs the cereal box. SHAKE, SHAKE! Duck falls out of the box and lands with a PLOP! Duck happily licks his beak.

What did you eat for breakfast today?

Cooper by Jarrett Lerner

A yellow chick (Cooper) hatches squints its eyes then jumps up high. LEAP! Cooper flaps his wings and cheers, “I’m flying! I’m flying!” He stops moving his wings. “I knew I could do it.” WHOOSH! Cooper quickly falls to the ground and lands on his head. “Oops.”

Would you like to fly?
