Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy (LTK), an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, tries to toss a crumpled piece of paper into a small wastebasket but misses. “Oops!” LTK tries again, but the paper hits the edge of the basket and falls on the ground. “Rats!” They try one more time – the paper flies over the basket, missing it completely. LTK, frowning, picks up the paper and places it right into the basket. “Shame.”

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “The Littlest Dungeon Guard cared for the beasts,” (LDG, a small, cute skeleton in a purple tunic, scrubs a fanged, multi-eyed purple creature using a large brush)/ “(a job she didn’t mind in the least).” (LDG reads a Bedtime Stories book to a snake-like red dragon with wings)/ “Whether tusked, winged or horned, she’d cook night till morn” (LDG looks at a bok titled The Monster Book of Recipes while she mixes a bowl with potion bottles nearby)/ “To make sure each monster had a feast.” (LDG happily says, “Dinner time!” as she holds out a large cooked piece of meat for a smiling, hungry green monster with three eyes and a horn on its nose.)

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

Norma and Belly, two squirrels, stand by a small mound of powder (labeled “flour”). Belly, round, asks, “What’s next?” Norma, angular, says, “I’ll ask my phone.” Norma picks up a tin can with a string attached and speaks into it: “Hello!” A pigeon looks into the other end of the tin can phone as Norma continues: “How do I make donuts?” Norma listens. TAK TAK TAK! “It’s morse code!” she tells Belly. “Quick – grab a pen!”

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

Mr. Wolf, a brown anthropomorphic teacher wolf in a green sweater over a blue collared shirt, says, “Please come see me when you are done.” A small pink dog with a bow on her ear holds up a paper and says, “Excuse me Wolfman. I’m done.” Mr. Wolf looks at her paper. “But this is just a drawing… where is the writing?” The student frowns and replies, “I know, because I don’t like to write. I only like to draw.” Then the student looks furious: “It makes me very angry when you make me write and it makes me want to quit school all together!” She tears her paper in half and Mr. Wolf gasps.

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

Duck (small, yellow, and round) and Pup (a tan dog in a blue shirt) sit at a counter with two empty white bowls with spoons inside. Pup holds a cereal box (“Rice Bitties”) and pours some cereal into Duck’s bowl first. Duck smiles. Then Pup pours cereal into his own bowl. Pup picks up his spoon and Duck looks curious. Pup turns and Duck sneaks behind him, carrying the box of cereal. In the last panel, Duck has his head inside the cereal box: MUNCH! NOM! Pup looks annoyed.

What will Duck eat next?

Food City by Jarrett Lerner

A yellow chick (Cooper) has a “grumble” in his tummy. He looks to the right, then appears surprised. A brown worm with large eyes is next to Cooper, its head peeking out of a hole in the ground. “Hi!” says Cooper. “Are you food?” The worm, sweating, replies, “Me? Food? Pssh. No way. I’m not food!” In the final panel the worm balances a slice of pepperoni pizza on its tail and says, “THIS is food.”

Do worms eat pizza?

Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls, closes his eyes and raises his arm. “Sit!” he commands. He points to his beak:“Speak!” He bends his flippers: “Roll over!” We zoom out and see he’s talking to a clueless pet goldfish in its fishbowl. Reggie looks upset and says, “Don’t you know ANY tricks?!”
