Bark Star by Dan & Jason

A round yellow dog with small brown ears and a tiny curly tail, walks on two legs as it wanders through an empty dark forest. “Sooooooooo hungry!” it says. Then it sees a plate of food scraps next left to a campfire that’s no longer burning. “FOOD!” The dog, now standing on all four feet, wildly devours the food. “Gotta scarf this down before I get caught!” Suddenly a long, skinny arm reaches in from off panel and touches the dog’s back. Pat, pat. A large purple question mark appears above the dog’s head.

Whose hand could that be?

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “One day, LDG found an egg green as grass,” (LDG, a small, cute skeleton in a purple tunic, walks through her cave and notices a spotted, green egg in the foreground)/ “and wondered how such a strange egg came to pass.” (LDG looks curious and says, “It’s not a dragon egg… do we have cave chickens?”)/ “She care for it for days, until to her dismay –” (LDG reads the egg, wearing a purple scarf, a story; then the egg wiggles and LDG says “It’s hatching!!” as hearts appear above her head)/ “she learned it was just a small cave troll with gas” (LDG’s eyes water as a small spotted green creature lets out a big green TOOT! And says, “Good gracious, I’m SO sorry!”.)

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

Norma and Belly, two squirrels, stand by a small flour pot. Belly, round, stirs a stick in the pot: Mix, mix, mix. Belly pulls out the stick and examines the goop at the end. “This is going to be a donut? she asks. Norma, angular, answers, “Yes. But…” Norma pulls out a small blue towel and places it over the pot. She continues, “First it needs to rest.”

Why does dough need to rest?

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

An orange bird wearing a gray jacket looks at a blue crayon. “I’m going to sharpen this crayon,” he thinks. He brings the crayon to a large green and red pencil sharpener. “This is a good idea,” he thinks. He jams the crayon in the hole. SHOVE! The pencil sharpener makes a noise: CHUGGA CHUGGA! Then the crayon breaks, and a piece of it is stuck inside the hole of the sharpener. “Whoops!” the bird thinks as the pencil sharpener goes “RRRRRR.”

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

Duck (small, yellow, and round) pours cereal in his mouth from a blue box labeled Rice Bitties. Duck holds the box to his side and suddenly places his hand over his belly. RUMBLE RUMBLE. Duck opens his beak and lets out a stinky BURP! Embarrassed, Duck covers his beak with both hands. He smiles as Pup (a tan dog in a blue shirt) pinches his own nose and sticks out his tongue in disgust. In the final panel Duck hops around smiling and burping: BURP! BURP! BURP!

Cooper by Jarrett Lerner

A yellow chick (Cooper) closes his eyes as he stands under the warm sun. “Ahhh…” he says, “Nothing beats the warm –” Suddenly the sky is dark. “Who turned off the lights?” Cooper asks. A gray cloud with eyes and a mouth responds, “Whoops. Sorry.” The cloud moves off panel, revealing the sun again. “Ahhh…” says Cooper.

Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls and puppy dog slipper, sits in his bedroom playing with blocks. His friend, a gray hippo in a yellow shirt and green shorts, walks in carrying a toy spaceship. “Heya, Reggie!” he says. “Wow! Cool slippers!” Reggie looks down at his slippers and says, “Thanks…” A closeup of Reggie’s feet shows his puppy dog slippers have blue floppy ears, button eyes, and pink tongues sticking out. “I wanted a real puppy,” Reggie explains, “but my mama got me these instead.” Reggie’s friend smiles and says, “Well, look on the bright side – slippers don’t need to be potty trained!” Reggie scowls in response.

Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy (LTK), an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, tosses a ball of red yard to a cream colored dog with brown fluffy ears and tail. “Fetch!” “Woof!” LTK throws it again. “Again!” The dog chases the ball of yarn. “Woof! Woof!” LTK shouts “Again!” The dog sweats as it jumps up to catch the yarn. As the sweaty dog hands the ball back to LTK it says, “w-Ooof! How about we switch places?” LTK, eyes closed and smiling, replies, “No, that’s OK! I like throwing.”

What do you like better: throwing or catching?
