I AM by Lala Watkins

(An illustrated poem): I am the Moon (a cute, white round moon with arms and legs smiles), the Sun’s my best friend (a yellow, smiling sun giggles with Moon). And while he’s asleep (Sun is in bed, under the covers, with a pink eye mask on) I watch the humans (Moon sits on a pink cloud holding a box of popcorn, and drinks from a cup with a straw) with the help of my friends (a panel filled with smiling white stars). They tell me secrets no one should know (a little star whispers into Moon’s “ear”) so I tell the Sun to shine the brightest (Moon’s pink phone shows a text message saying “shine bright”) on those below (Sun smiles, arms outstretched, surrounded by sparkles).

What do you think the Moon’s ringtone sounds like?

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “In LDG’s dungeon there was treasure most fine,” (mounds of golden coins are spotted with a few red jewels and a couple swords)/ “gold that would glitter and jewels that would shine!” (closeup: gold coins, a golden cup, and a medallion and sword with a red jewel inside)/ “LDG guarded the hoard, but when she got bored…” (LDG holds a small spear and peeks into the cave of treasure)/ “She’d pretend it was her private goldmine.” (LDG sits on a throne surrounded by gold coins. She wears a gold crown and holds a gold scepter and says, “Guards! Take them away! I am the QUEEN!”)

Which treasure is your favorite?

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

Belly, a smiling round squirrel, places a blue blanket over a small pot hanging from a tree branch. Outside her tree, we see a crescent moon shining in the black night sky. In the next panel, the sun is shining, and Belly sits next to the covered pot. Belly is holding a newspaper and looks at the pot with a smile. Norma, an angular squirrel, arrives and peeks under the blanket. “It’s grown!” she exclaims. “I’ll get the oil bubbling!” Norma runs off and Belly looks worried, standing guard by the covered pot.

What will happen next?

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

A white bunny in a green shirt asks Mr. Wolf, “Mr. Wolf… can we use the white board?” “Yeah, can we?” asks a pink pig in a red spotted shirt. Mr. Wolf says, “Sure. Just make sure you erase it when you’re done.” The bunny exclaims, “Yay! Let’s go! Alright!” The pig giggles. The two animals write on the whiteboard. Later, Mr. Wolf turns off the lights and says, “Okay everyone, it’s now time to clean up.” Mr. Wolf looks at the whiteboard and thinks, “Hey!” The whiteboard has cute drawings of a heart, sun, and bee. The writing says, “We love you, Mr. Wolf!” Mr. Wolf thinks, “I told them to erase this.” And he begins to wipe away their markings with an eraser.

What message would you leave on the white board?

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

Pup (a brown down in a blue shirt) sweeps with a broom as Duck (small, yellow, and round) looks on. SWISH! SWISH! Duck follows Pup as Pup continues sweeping inside the house. Pup sweeps debris into a silver dust pan – FOOF! – as Duck watches. Pup opens a green trash can and pours in the debris. Duck then opens the trash can, and looks inside. An exclamation point appears above his head. Then Duck begins to climb inside!

Have you ever found something good in a trash can?

Cooper by Jarrett Lerner

A yellow chick (Cooper) looks sad. A brown worm pokes out of a hole in the ground and asks, “What’s got you down, Cooper?” Cooper replies, “I just… I can’t figure out how to fly.” “Keep at it,” says the worm. “You’ll get it. And meanwhile… you can always RIDE.” In the final panel Cooper stands on the worm like it’s a skateboard. The worm wiggles along and Cooper happily shouts, “Weeeee!”

Would it be fun to ride on a worm?

Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls, sits at a table next to his stuffed bunny. He looks down at his plate, listing what food he sees: “Ooh! Peanut butter sticks, fishy crackers, and…” Reggie points to some small carrots with his flipper. “What are these?” From off panel, a voice says, “Baby carrots.” Reggie stares at the reader. Then – he erupts into a tantrum: “I’M NOT A BABY!” Reggie leaps up from the table, upsetting the dish, and carrots, feathers, and his stuffed bunny fly everywhere.

Why are they called “baby carrots”?

Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy (LTK), an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, happily waves at a small yellow bird perched in a tree. “Hello, Birdie!” The bird has a stern expression and says, “What do you want, LTK.” LTK begins to drool. His eyes widen. “YOU know what I want!” he shouts. The bird scrowls. “Don’t be a creep, LTK.”

What does LTK want?
