Bark Star by Dan & Jason

A round yellow dog with small brown ears and a tiny curly tail, grumpily chews on some sausage links as he walks through a forest at nighttime. A voice from inside a red camping tent says, “You left food out there?” Inside the tent, we see a family in their sleeping bags (Dad, short brown hair and glasses, Mom, long brown hair in a ponytail and glasses, and a boy, short, spiky black hair and large round eyes). Dad holds up a lantern and Mom says, “We’re in the middle of nowhere! It could attract anything!” Dad replies, “C’mon, honey. I think you’re overreacting.” In the final panel, we see a GIANT bear approach the tent – it has huge sharp teeth and is thinking, “FOOD.”

Where did that bear come from?

I AM by Lala Watkins

(An illustrated poem): I am the Sun (a cute, yellow sun with arms and legs stands on a white cloud and smiles), the Moon’s my best friend (a smiling white, round Moon lay in the grass next to a smiling, winking Sun). And while she’s asleep (Moon is in bed, under the covers, with a pink eye mask on and teddy bear next to her. It’s daylight outside the window.) I watch the humans (Sun, wearing heart sunglasses, sits on a white cloud next to a rainbow eating an ice cream cone) with the help of my friends (a panel filled with smiling white clouds – two are at the ends of a rainbow). I make lots of things grow (four smiling flowers and a buzzing bee are under the sunlight) and they send me wishes of those below (Sun smiles at speech bubbles filled with symbols like a heart and a paw). So I tell the Moon (a pink card, next to a yellow envelope, reads: Dear Moon, Here’s a list of demands. - Sun) to make it all come true (the Moon, surrounded by smiling stars, smiles and reaches out her arms).

What’s your wish?

The Littlest Dungeon Guard by Meggie Ramm

(An illustrated limerick): “The treasure hoard tempted Snurkie the Thief,” (a sneaky-looking green goblin in a hooded cloak climbs down a rope above mounds of gold coins)/ “-- who found their way down to the gold underneath.” (Snurkie, at the bottom of the rope, says, “Oh, crud.” as he comes face-to-face with a red, horned serpent – LDG is riding on its back.)/ “They’d meet LDG’s friends which meant in the end – ” (The serpent says ROAR! And breathes flames over Snurkie)/ “-- that their time in the dungeon was brief.” (Snurkie has smoke trailing off their nose. The serpent and LDG smile. LDG says, “Thanks, pal!”)

Would you want a fire-breathing dragon as a friend?

Norma and Belly by Mika Song

Belly, a round squirrel, stands guard in front of a pot covered with a blue blanket. Sternly, she tells Norma (an angular squirrel), “No one touches my dough!” Norma replies, “But then how will we make donuts?” A close-up shows Norma thinking. In the final panel, the dough is rolled out on the table and Belly holds up cookie cutters. “We can use these to cut out rings!” Both squirrels look happy.

What’s your favorite flavor of donut?

Mr. Wolf by Aron Nels Steinke

A single panel shows Mr. Wolf, a brown wolf wearing a blue shirt, a green necktie, and blue pants, opening his classroom door. His students (various animals wearing jackets and rainboots) run outside, splashing in puddles. One kid smiles and calls out, “Freedom!”

How do rainy days make you feel?

Pup and Duck by Dave Roman

Duck (small, yellow, and round) is stuck, head-first, inside a green trash can. CRASH! The trash can, with Duck inside, falls over. Pup (a brown down in a blue shirt) pulls out Duck. SQUEAK! Pup sheds a tear. Pup then puts the trash can upright. With a broom, Pup sweeps up the mess. Duck picks up some small round crumbs. Duck tosses them, like he’s playing basketball. The crumbs land inside the trash can and Duck looks pleased.

Have you ever cleaned up the same mess twice?

Cooper by Jarrett Lerner

A yellow chick (Cooper) had two curly hairs sticking up on his head. He uses his wing to straighten them out. RUFFLE! But the hairs pop back up. SPROING! He furiously tries to straighten the hairs. RUFFLE RUFFLE RUFFLE RUFFLE! Finally, the hairs are straight and Cooper looks pleased. Then – SPROING! – Cooper bounces up and off the panel.

What sound do you make when you bounce?

Reggie by Jen de Oliveira

Reggie, a kid penguin dressed in overalls and holding a stuffed bunny, is making a tower of blocks with his cousin Poppy (a taller penguin wearing a long green shirt and a purple headband with a star). Poppy says, “Hey! I remember that bunny.” Reggie grumpily replies, “It’s ‘Bubba.’” Poppy, eyes closed and hearts appearing above her head, says, “You’ve had him since you were a baby.” Reggie fumes. Then – he has a fit: “I’M NOT A BABY!” After his tantrum, Reggie settles back down. The room is a mess – blocks and feathers everywhere – but he happily stacks his blocks as though nothing happened. Poppy looks annoyed and says, “Seriously?”

Have you had a toy since you were a… baby?

Long Tail Kitty by Lark Pien

Long Tail Killy (LTK), an orange striped cat with a long, skinny tail, reaches across a table toward a tall yellow cookie jar. LTK struggles, sweat coming off his head, as a little blue mouse peeks into the panel. LTK says, “Why so tall, cookie jar?!?!” The mouse walks across the table , grabs the lid of the cookie jar, and replies, “So that I can open it!” The mouse reaches into the jar and says, “And grab a cookie!” LTK looks outraged. The mouse then hands the cookie to LTK and says, “And give it to youuuuuu.” Hearts appear above LTK’s head and he says, “Oh, thank you.”

Have you helped someone today?
