Nutty Conversations by Ruthie Lafond

Almond is covered in a sheet with holes for eyes. Almond says hi to Macadamia. Macadamia is dressed up as a cat and says, “meow meow, Almond.” Walnut is dressed up as a witch with a broom and says, “cackle cackle,beautiful Marcona.” Marcona is dressed up as a butterfly. All the nuts look scared. A nut is dressed up as a bottle of Peanut Butter. “Too scary!” They all say.

Nina the white rat runs through the tall grass towards the boarded up house. She runs with her eyes closed and hopes no one is behind her. She runs into the opening of a rain gutter and in the dark Roachie the Roach says “Hi, Nina!”

Mark’s dad sits at the table of food with the rest of the family and asks what everyone thought of his creation. “Delicious, dear!” says the mother. “Yum!” says Zark the green martian. “It’s actually pretty good," says Mark. “Goo,” says the baby. “Meh,” says the babysitter. The dad is happy and says to the babysitter they thought it was their highest possible rating. The babysitter shrugs.

Norma and Belly, two squirrels, grab their ghost sheets and put them on screaming, “Trick or treat!” They stand looking up at a door as someone says, “ Who threw tissues on the ground?”

Nublin, the armless friend in pants screams, “Boo!’ and scares Wriggler who is dressed up in a witches hat rather than their usual party hat. Wriggler laughs and then tells a joke to Nublin. “What’s a ghost’s favorite food?” Nublin says they know this one and they both scream together, “I scream!”

Patty Cadaver sees her younger brother, Peter, leaving the house in shorts and a whistle around his neck. Patty asks what he is doing. Peter explains he is trick or treating as a lifeguard. Patty says it’s too cold to wear just that and puts a scarf, jacket and a floatie with a duck head on Peter. Later, Belanie the witch sees Peter and asks him what his costume is. Peter replies that he is dressed as an over-protected younger brother.

There is a halloween party with a hippo dressed as the monster of Frankenstein, a salamander dressed as a mad professor, a gerbil dressed as a lobster, and other animals dressed as a lego brick, a cactus, a dinosaur and a king. They are all angry and think something is unfair going on one side of the room. Sploosh! Reggie’s legs are sticking out of a tub full of water and apples. Reggie pops out of the water with an apple stuck between his fangs saying, “Happy Halloween!”
