Artist Spotlight:
My name is Jarrett Lerner, and my comic strip's title is Food City.
What was your favorite comic, video, or cartoon character growing up?
I loved Calvin & Hobbes, and also Garfield. I was also in Peanuts -- but I would eagerly run and grab the newspaper every Sunday morning to read the new Calvin & Hobbes and Garfields before anyone else in my family could snatch the funny pages. I was also growing up in what I think was a Golden Age for Nickelodeon cartoons. The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Doug, the Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, the Angry Beavers -- all that stuff was coming out when I was a kid, and I was head over heels for it all.
What is your favorite thing to draw?
I love anthropomorphizing everyday objects. In other words, I like putting human features (faces and arms and legs) on things that don't have them. Like food. And coffee cups. And shoes and hats.
What art tools do you use to make your comics?
I often just use old-fashioned composition books as my notebooks and sketchbooks. But when I've got something ready to finalize, I use an iPad, the Apple Pencil (second generation), and an app called Procreate.
Where can readers find more of your books, comics, or stuff that you make or do?
Readers can find my books anywhere books are sold! In addition to those, I've got tons of fun, free stuff (activities, comics, art, and even a whole novel) at my website (jarrettlerner.com) and on my YouTube channel (just search my name and you'll find me). I'm also on both Twitter and Instagram at @Jarrett_Lerner.
If you are a young creator interested in making comics and developing your characters and drawing skills this summer, check out Jarrett’s Creator Club (a 5-week online course).
Jarrett has a new Nat the Cat out this week! Congratulations, Jarrett!
That’s it!
Until next week, stay silly!
